‘Sometimes you just have to fight through the boos… Over the past few weeks, many of my white and other non-black clients, colleagues and friends have inquired from me as to what Institutional Racism means. A few of them challenged the concept by pointing to the many successful black men and women in America today. One of them challenged me by asking “how could you become so successful if the system is racist?”’ David began his message.
He continued and said: ‘Unfortunately, many white and other non-black Americans who have never experienced racism, particularly the deeply engrained and exceedingly destructive Institutional Racism that exists in abundance in America today, sometimes find it hard to understand and connect with our struggles. It is difficult for them to understand that many successful black people in America today succeeded DESPITE the system, and not necessarily BECAUSE of the system.’

David also said that ‘To highlight the challenges black men and women have navigating the system, I have decided to tell my story of being a black man in Corporate America, starting with school.’

Someone else said: ‘When you mention this last week on young YouTube I was very surprised but not shocked about the racism here in Boston. I deal with this on a daily basis. I too did not go to my high school and college reunions because of the same exact reasons. Yes you did get your education from HBS, but I don’t blame you one bit for not returning. You don’t own anyone a thing. You worked hard and that’s all that matters.’
